Asolo the city of a hundred horizon

  >  City   >  Asolo the city of a hundred horizon

Travelers today we bring you to discover the province of Treviso (Veneto – Italy) and in particular the municipalities of Asolo and Possagno.

ASOLO

Defined by Carducci the City of a hundred horizons, Asolo is one of the most suggestive historical centers of Italy because every corner bears witness of its ancient history.

The first stop on our itinerary is Piazza Garibaldi with its sixteenth-century fountain topped by the winged lion of St. Mark. From here you can easily reach the main monuments of Asolo and you can admire the cathedral: inside there are two important altarpieces of Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo da Ponte.

Advancing in the square followed the directions to “the Rocca”: following the road on the slopes of Mount Ricco, which dominates the main square, you will see Villa Scotti-Pasini. The main building was made in the eighteenth century, and then were added the two wings that gave the building its present appearance. Moving beyond the villa we follow the well-marked trail, which among olive trees and wonderful views will lead you to the Rocca.

La Rocca: Built between the mid-late twelfth century and early thirteenth this structure, built like a polygon with walls 15 meters high, was used to defend the territory. To enter the ticket costs 2 Euros. In summer it is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 12 and from 15 to 19. In winter it is open: 10-19 Saturday and Sunday (April-October); 10- 17 Saturday and Sunday (November to March).

Coming down from the Rocca we admired the antique market and the ancient medieval houses of the center until arriving to the castle dates back to the tenth century.
In 1242 was the home of “Ezzelino da Romano” and from 1339 it became the seat of the mayor of Venice. At the end of the fourteenth century was welded to the city walls during the brief rule of Carraresi’s family.

Of the four towers that characterized the castle three remain today: the civic tower or bell, the tower Reata with the prison and the tower “Carro” now included in the house called La Torricella.

Worthy of a visit is the Civic Museum, the the Longobard house and the house of the famous actress Eleonora Duse in via Canova, but I leave you to discover these places rich of history. Enjoy the visit.
