In this itinerary I would like to tell you about a tropical jungle populated by beautiful butterflies. I’ve not explored the forests of the Amazon and Asia, but Santorso, a small village at the foot of Mount Summano in the province of Vicenza (Veneto), which houses one of the largest structures in Italy where they fly free and breed hundreds tropical butterflies.
The Butterfly Garden in the “Oasi Rossi” park is housed in a greenhouse of 1200 square meters and offers to visitors the opportunity to discover and learn about the life cycle of butterflies: from eggs to caterpillars, from caterpillar to the transformation in chrysalis until the rebirth as butterfly.
Born 18 years ago at the behest of the Cooperativa Nuovi Orizzonti, that helps people in difficult situations to find work with activities that respect nature, the Butterfly Garden was recently renovated thanks to the support of the association “Farfalle nella testa” that manages the greenhouse of butterflies in Bordano in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Inside the greenhouse fly thousand butterflies and live to many rare insects such as stick insects 30 cm long, large rhinoceros beetles and rare emperor moth. An introductory exhibition explains to visitors the biology of these animals and then you embark on a path through the tropical jungle. I recommend everyone to visit it, because it is great to see hundreds of colorful butterflies dancing around you.
In addition to the Butterfly Garden in the Oasi Rossi of Santorso you can enjoy a petting zoo with farm animals and lamas, discover the green paths with electric bicycles, make barbecue outdoors, eating in the Oasis restaurant, buy flowers and plants in the flower shop, and let children play in the play areas equipped to allow disabled children to play with those normo equipped.
Oasi Rossi, in street Salzena, in the town of Santorso in the province of Vicenza (Veneto- Italy) is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 to 18; Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 18.30.
