In Alto Adige South Tyrol begins the most magical period of the year: that of the Christmas markets. 

From November 24, 2017, to January 6, 2018, the streets will be decorated with fir branches, rows of lights and wooden houses that will host artisans and chef, while the air will sprinkle with the perfume of cinnamon biscuits and vine brulè. There will be five cities where you could live this Christmas atmosphere: Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone, Vipiteno, and Brunico.

BOLZANO

The Christmas market will be opened on Thursday, November 23, 2017, at 17, and the specialties to be enjoyed will be apple pancakes, the traditionals Zelten and Stollen, desserts made with dried fruits and candies, and the Lebkunchen, spicy biscuits.

Bolzano will also host the third edition of “A Christmas of Books”, a literary review that will bring in the city Italian and German writers, while at the Station Park, not only it will be set up a stand of books, but every day at 4.30 pm a box will be opened of the Advent Calendar.

MERANO

In this market, families with children will be able to meet the mascot, Goldy, in whose wooden house they can attend workshops to create Christmas decorations and greeting cards. The activities will start on November 23 at 5 pm in the Scalinata delle Fontane in corso Libertà, and at 20:30 in the Kursaal hall will be the concert of the young lyrical voices of the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation. Among the typical dishes to taste there are the velvety cheeses on Schuttelbrot croutons and buckwheat dumplings with a heart of soft cheese.

BRESSANONE

In Piazza Duomo, in addition to the many crafts, there are live concerts of traditional choirs and, on Saturdays and Sundays, the special Christmas Carriage to visit the historic center. In addition, from November 24, 2017 to January 2, 2018, families can send their greeting cards to the Christkindl post office. For the third year Bressanone hosts “The Dream of Soliman” the show of lights that in the courtyard of Palazzo Vescovile tells the story of the elephant Soliman.

BRUNICO

At the foot of the Plan De Corones, this town will be animated, on Thursday, November 23 the day that the Christmas market will be opened, with traditional songs and music to be heard, tasting “Strauben” pancakes with jam, Cron-Burger with meat from the Val Pusteria and cheese, roasted with speck and potatoes, homemade sausage with sauerkraut, gulasch soup in the bowl of bread and many other delicacies. During the Advent period, every day from 1st to 24th December, the Market Angel stands at 4.30 pm in the town hall square to open the calendar windows.

VIPITENO

The atmosphere, in this historic city decorated with Advent wreaths and hand-made decorations, will take you back in time to make you live Christmas according to the oldest traditions. The market will be open on November 23 at 5 pm in the church S.Spirito in Piazza Città. Additionally, from 11am to 4pm, you can take a tour of the historic center by carriage, while the most adventurous can discover the silver, lead and zinc mines of Monteneve. On December 5 at 6 pm, do not miss the S.Nicolò’s procession: while the servants help San Nicolò in distributing the gifts to the children, the devils keep the order and blacken some faces with fat and charcoal.
